TypingGuild practice goals (WPM), not population averages

1

What do WPM and accuracy mean on this typing test?

WPM (words per minute) is calculated from correctly typed characters: divide by 5, then divide by elapsed minutes, and round to a whole number. Accuracy is correctly typed characters divided by all typed characters, shown as a percentage. Both update as you type.

2

What is a good typing speed?

A large 2018 online study of 168,000 volunteers reported a mean of about 52 WPM (Dhakal et al., CHI 2018). Speeds vary by experience, language, and test format. TypingGuild's practice goals above (30 / 40 / 60 WPM) are suggested targets for practice — not universal occupational requirements. Prioritize accuracy, then build speed.

3

Is this typing test free?

Yes. TypingGuild is completely free, requires no signup, and runs in your browser. Take the 1-minute test above for a quick check, or try longer sessions when you want more time on the keyboard.

4

How can I improve my typing speed?

Practice regularly with short sessions, prioritize accuracy before speed, and retest with the same duration so results are comparable. Use the guided lessons above for technique practice, and track your own history rather than expecting a fixed improvement timeline.
