A thesis statement is the main claim of an essay, usually stated in one sentence at the end of the introduction. A strong thesis takes a position that someone could disagree with. "Social media is popular" is a fact, not a thesis. "Schools should teach students how social media apps are designed to hold their attention" is a claim that the rest of the essay must prove. A good thesis also hints at the reasons the essay will explore.
