There are three ways to use a source. A quotation copies the exact words and puts them in quotation marks. A paraphrase restates one idea in your own words and sentence structure. A summary gives the main points of a longer passage in a few sentences. All three need a citation. Quote only when the exact wording matters, such as a striking phrase or a key definition. Otherwise, paraphrase; it shows that you understand the source and keeps your own voice in charge.
