In the United States, citizens can vote once they turn 18. Before 1971, the voting age in most states was 21, but the 26th Amendment lowered it. Voters choose leaders at every level. They elect a mayor and a city council for their town, and a governor and lawmakers for their state. They also elect members of Congress and a president. Local leaders make choices about things you see every day, like parks, libraries, roads and schools.
