Ancient Greece was not one country but hundreds of city-states, each with its own laws and army. Athens and Sparta were the most famous. In Sparta, boys began military training at the age of 7, and the city was known for its fierce soldiers. Athens became a center of art, plays and learning. Around 508 BC, Athens set up a system called democracy, which means rule by the people. Citizens met to vote on laws, although women, enslaved people and foreigners could not vote.
