Ancient China grew up along the Yellow River, which carries a fine yellow soil called loess. For thousands of years, China was ruled by dynasties, or families that passed power from one generation to the next. The first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, joined many warring states into one empire in 221 BC. He set one system of writing, money and weights for the whole land. He was buried with an army of thousands of life-size clay soldiers.
