A biome is a large region with a similar climate, plants and animals. The tundra is cold and treeless, and the ground below the surface, called permafrost, stays frozen all year. Deserts get less than 10 inches of rain a year, and plants like cactuses store water in thick stems. Grasslands have rich soil and few trees, and they are home to grazing animals such as bison and zebras. Tropical rainforests are warm and wet all year.
