The United States has 50 states. Alaska is the largest, and Rhode Island is the smallest. Hawaii is the only state made up entirely of islands, and it sits in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Texas is the second largest state. The nation's capital, Washington, D.C., isn't part of any state. Each state has its own capital city, government and flag.
