In a chemical reaction, atoms rearrange to form new substances. Chemists write reactions as equations, with reactants on the left and products on the right: 2H2 + O2 -> 2H2O. Two molecules of hydrogen gas react with one of oxygen to make two molecules of water. The equation is balanced: there are 4 hydrogen atoms and 2 oxygen atoms on each side. Atoms are never created or destroyed in a reaction, a rule called the law of conservation of mass.
