The library opens at nine, but Maya likes to arrive a little early. She waits on the stone steps with a cup of tea and watches the street wake up. A baker carries trays of bread into the cafe next door; a cyclist rings her bell at a slow bus. When the doors finally open, Maya heads straight for the reading room on the second floor. It's quiet there, and the tall windows let in plenty of light. She spreads out her notes, opens her laptop and starts to write. "Just one page today," she tells herself. By lunchtime she has written four, and she isn't tired at all.
